Subject: “Do Not Brand Us Terroists”

The letter published on Wednesday by Gehad El-Haddad from his prison cell, contains many facts as well as many falsehoods.

He states “We believe …no one has a divine mandate or the right to impose a single vision on society”. However, this is precisely what the Brotherhood tried to do when in power. A presidential decree put executive decisions beyond review by the courts. A recall movement called Tamarrod (Rebellion) resulted in millions of signatures on a petition demanding only early election. Rejected. The rest is history.

Circumstantial evidence implicate the Brotherhood in many violent incidences including assassinations, bombings and other acts of violence.

Charitable activities by the Brotherhood while laudable, should not be confused with social justice policies (or lack thereof) by crony capitalism while in government.

On the other hand, the mass incarceration of thousands of citizens by the Egyptian government without due process can not be condoned. A fair trial or immediate release.

The US government should not list the Brotherhood as terrorist. Neither should it cuddle them and empower their machinations.
